Red Meat Group
Summary:
The North West Red Meat Group was formed in 2003 and its main objective is to enable the North West red meat sector to become an integrated part of a financially sustainable and environmentally friendly red meat supply chain. The aim of the group is to work together to mutual advantage and to share resources, knowledge and skills.
Impact of the Red Meat Group:
In the main the group has concentrated on a number of key projects to the region, including: The Stabiliser Project- a composite beef improvement scheme that has successfully been awarded nearly £400k; and the Homebred Scheme that received funding of nearly £150k. Both projects are not exclusive.
Other projects involving red meat are;
- In partnership with The Red Meat Industry Forum a project to deliver Master classes, Probe and METRICS.
- In partnership with Chamber of Commerce East Lancashire, Cumbria Rural Enterprise Agency, Voluntary Action Cumbria, Rural Futures and the Mungrisdale Sheep A Study to Determine the Feasibility of Establishing a Supply Chain for Halal Lamb from Cumbrian Excess Stocks into East Lancashire Marketing Group, Asian Business Federation;
- In partnership with Cumbria Vision and Bowland Atlantic Research Consultancy; A study in Developing Regional Supply Chain Interest in Halal Kill
- In partnership with EBLEX; Promotional Materials for Targeted Cattle Selection
The next steps for the Red Meat Group:
The Red meat Group membership includes representatives from all the key regional agencies, delivery organisations and some private industry stakeholders. A small working group has been formed to push forward the development of a North West red meat strategy and action plan, a document that is seen as the key to the development and sustainability of the North West red meat sector. The service provider will be chosen after a formalized tendering process has being completed.
