Mayor Celebrates Wirral Farmers’ Market Success

2 February 2008

Members of Wirral Farmers’ Market, friends, partners and supporters all gathered for a special Mayoral celebration in honour of the market.

The reception was held to mark the fact that the market won ‘Best in the UK’ in BBC Radio 4 Food and Farming Awards.

In a change to the usual reception, held at the town hall in Wallasey, producers Barbara of Neston and Mary, of Mary’s Cakes, had offered to create a buffet made from all the produce available at the market.

The feast had everything from pies and salads to local cheeses and scrumptious puddings, served up with local beer, cider and apple juice.

Producers travelled from all over the region to join in the celebrations.

Mike and Tim Brady, the sons of the founder of the market Amy Brady, also attended and were delighted to see the market going from strength to strength.

Chairman of Wirral Farmers’ Market, Anne Benson, said: “It was a lovely evening and it was great to see so many people who have supported us over the years, including the management committee of New Ferry village hall, Grove Street Primary School and New Ferry Regeneration Action Group.

“It was also a chance to thank all the volunteers, who have put their time and effort into making the market a success and remembering key people like Amy Brady and Barry Judd, the former market manager.”

This month’s market takes place at New Ferry Village Hall on Saturday, February 9, from 9am.

It is the perfect place to shop for that special Valentine’s meal.

There will be the usual offering of fantastic produce including flowers, chillies, olive oil, olives, fresh seasonal vegetables just plucked from the ground and a variety of healthy fish as well as pies, chutneys, beef, lamb, fantastic cakes, chocolates and fresh herbs.

Wirral Farmers’ Market is a voluntary organisation set up to regenerate the area and its surroundings, and works in partnership with New Ferry Regeneration Group, North West Fine Foods, Lairdside Community Trust and Health Links.

It is run by a group of volunteers, who live and work in the area and organise the market in their spare time.
