National award for Low Sizergh Barn
A family dairy farming business near Kendal achieved national recognition in the 2008 Farm Business Food & Farming Awards at a presentation at the House of Commons on Friday 5th December. The award for rural enterprise was presented to Alison Park and Marjorie Park by James Paice M.P., Shadow Minister for Agriculture and Rural Affairs.
The Park family: Marjorie and John with son Richard and daughter, Alison, farm a 275 acre organic dairy farm that diversified into its farm shop, Low Sizergh Barn in 1991. The tea room overlooks the milking parlour and the work of local potters and artists lines the walls of the late 17th century Westmorland stone barn. The farm’s organic milk is sold in the newly extended shop and to local hotels and restaurants along with 3 cheeses and ice cream made from the milk. 450 hens supply the free range eggs. A community enterprise, Growing Well, grows the organic vegetables, also offering horticulture training and educational visits as a means of creating volunteer opportunites for people recovering from mental health issues.
The award, sponsored by Savills, was given for innovation, dedication and entrepreneurship contributing to a vibrant and sustainable rural economy
