Wirral Food & Drink Festival launches on July 27.
A stick of rhubarb and a picture in a wheelbarrow has inspired a race with a difference.
The “Wacky Rhubarb Race”, which will be held on July 27 at the Port Sunlight Village Festival, is the brainchild of Andrew Pimbley, of Claremont Farm, the home of the Wirral Food and Drink Festival.
“We had a photo taken for the launch of this year’s Wirral Food and Drink Festival and I ended up in a wheelbarrow with Chef Brian Mellor pushing me, while clutching a bunch of rhubarb...it struck me it would be fun to have a wheelbarrow race and raise some money for a local charity and awareness of the festival”, so he created the idea of the “Wacky Rhubarb Race”, with all sponsorship money going to Claire House Hospice.
Teams of two will have to do a lap of the course, opposite the Bridge Inn, swapping places halfway through and tackling a couple of obstacles on the way just to add to the fun. They must carry rhubarb in some form throughout the race, whether it is in a stick or even a dish of crumble.
“We want people to have fun and dress up their wheelbarrows however they want“, explained Andy.
Entry costs £10, which goes to help run the Wirral Food and Drink Festival, and entrants also need to raise a minimum of £40 sponsorship money, which will go to Claire House Hospice. Port Sunlight Garden Centre has also agreed to provide wheelbarrows at cost for anyone who brings along their entry form.
Wirral Food and Drink Festival takes place on Sunday 24 and Monday 25 August; entry is free.
There will be a wide variety of entertainment, chefs’ demonstrations, more than 100 producers offering fantastic food and the return of the magnificent beer Papakata tepee with around 25 craft and artistan beers and ciders; a specialist wine and cheese area; a children’s area offering activities for all ages; book signings; a world food court and live music and radio broadcasts.
The festival is supported by Wirral Council, by ERDF funding, Cains, Wirral Farmers’ Market and M53 Ford.
