Regional Food Producers Recognised With MBEs

Food NW sends big congratulations to the regions' food producers who were recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours last week.

John Winnard MBE

John Winnard, Joint Managing Director of Uncle Joe’s Mintballs, has been awarded an MBE and specifically lauded for his work in developing international trade opportunities for SMEs and his tireless efforts in the Wigan and wider North West community to support economic growth.

John said:  “It’s great to be recognised. I think it is important in business that you are prepared to share your experience and hopefully inspire someone else to take up a challenge and be successful. The Uncle Joe’s brand has inspired us to develop the company – over 110 years of mint ball production teaches you a lot!”

John typically attributes this to his talented and committed workforce. “We have some great people alongside us,” he added.

Maria Whitehead MBE and Mark Whitehead MBE

In an unprecedented move Mark & Maria Whitehead joint owners of the Hawkshead Relish Company have also been honoured with MBEs.

Hawkshead Relish produces handmade preserves which hold 43 Great Taste Awards. From starting the business only 10 years ago, Mark & Maria have been adamant in their approach of using the finest locally sourced ingredients; developing the business within the local community. It is therefore fitting that the Honours are for `Services to Food Industry in Cumbria’.

Mark Whitehead commented “We have such great produce and producers here in Cumbria and this award reflects just a small part of that family and one that we will continue to champion.”

Maria Whitehead adds ` It is such a huge honour for a small business such as Hawkshead Relish to be recognised and we feel both humbled and thrilled that this honour recognises the hard work and dedication of the whole team here in Hawkshead’.
